Fire crews to stop attending automated business alarms

By October 21, 2013News

Cash-strapped Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are to stop responding to automatic fire alarms in business premises during the daytime.

The service has struggled to balance its books in the face of budget cuts and this summer approved measures to shed 150 jobs and slash £5.5 million, or 17% of the budget, over two years.

It has now announced that from November 1, it will no longer send firefighters to automated alerts in non-residential properties – the vast majority of which are false alarms – unless a fire at the premises is confirmed.
