Risk Assesment
The Regulatory Reform Fire Safety order 1995 came into force in October 2006; it is the foundation of all modern Fire Safety.
It places a reasonability on business owners (known as the "responsible person") to conduct a Fire Risk Assessment. More details from the Deputy Prime Minister here. There are a selection of options you can follow you can either:
Have a go yourself or employ a competent person to do one for you.
A) Having a go yourself - range of guidance document and helpful guides have been produced to assist.
The following is a list of the eleven planned RRO guides:
4. Small and Medium Places of assembly
9. Transport premises and facilities
10. Animal premises and stables
B) Employing a competent Fire Risk assessor
There are many companies and persons offering this service, choosing from the many can be a daunting task. Some elementary points to consider is the competency of the paid professional Risk Assessor, it's not simple.
You should and are entilted to consider at least the following:
- What qualifications do they have, PAS 79 is a basic first step qualification suitable for lower risk premises?
- Are you a Fire Safety specific risk assessor or just Health and Safety or asbestos risk assessment?
- Do you have specific Fire risk assessment efficacy or professional indemnity assurance?
- Do you have a fire safety back ground (fire Brigade experience)?
- Are you a member of a related trade association IFE for instance?
- Can you provide references?
Typically a risk assessment for a professional assessor will be start from around £300, if you are quoted less then beware and check the above and ask why.
A good risk assessment should at least save you the money you paid, by giving good advice on procuring the correct goods and services the first time.
Pay for a good assessment once and it will be an asset to the business for the future
We do not do risk assessments ourselves, we are a provider of goods and services, we have taken the approach that there could be a conflict of interest for us to specify work and then quote to provide that work.
We prefer to recommend some excellent industry professionals who will do what they do best, then we will provide a quotation if any work needs to be done.
Please call 0800 092 40 21 and ask for details of recommended risk assessors.
