Dry Risers

Whether you’re building a new office block and require a dry riser or have an existing one that needs servicing, Fire Crest Fire Protection can help. Dry risers are commonly found in buildings over four floors, used as a way of assisting the fire brigade to quickly pump water up to high levels. Drastically saves time not having to lay out and connect many lengths of hose from the fire engine up stairwells to the 4th floor and above.

With a dry riser, the fire engine crew can connect the hoses to the inlet breeching valve (pictured here next to our testing rig) and start pumping water up the pipe work. Another fire officer can quickly go to the floor, connect one length of hose to the riser landing valve, turn on the landing valve and pressurised water will flow........ in terms of speed of response to a fire it is a big time saver and therefore life and property saver.

Dry risers have outlet landing values on each floor inside the building, and water is distributed through an inlet on the ground floor, on the exterior of the building.  Dry risers need annual servicing to ensure all components are functioning correctly and can be relied upon when required.

Fire Crest dry riser testing

Like all essential fire fighting equipment, they must be competently serviced. BS 9990 states a full test every year with interim visual checks every six months.

"This certificated service must not be confused with familiarisation visits by the Fire Brigade"

The Brigade will occasionally attend as part of training exercises. They will not usually replace consumable spare parts or issue performance pressure tests or certificates needed to prove operational functionality.

We offer the full service, starting with a function and measured flow test of the nearest water hydrant through to a 10 BAR 15 minute static test.
We will re-seal the risers and issue the relevant certificates, and provide quotations for any remedial work. We can also provide the interim six monthly visual checks.

Dry Risers in Cornwall appear on the Fire Brigades inspection / audit sheet,
since they are going to be used by the Brigade themselves, it is particularly important to ensure they are maintained.

When used a dry riser not maintained and protected against vandalism has the potential to cause seriously expensive water damage to the building.

Private fire hydrants

These can also be referred to as ‘fixed place dry risers’.  They work in the same way as fire hydrants on the public highway and are often required where the land is privately owned and the landlord is responsible for ensuring water supply is available in the event of a fire.
Private fire hydrants might be required at:

Private hospitals
Military bases
Camp sites

Fire Crest Fire Protection installs private fire hydrants to the mains water, which must already be in place and available; and services existing private hydrants.

For camp sites, the system installed by Fire Crest Fire Protection is simple to use when required.

So whatever your premises, private hospital, military base or camp site, we can help.
