Photo luminescent Fire Safety Communication - an immediate light source in darkness

The loss of power and illumination in the event of an emergency can cause panic and confusion for the evacuee. When used effectively to locate, identify and instruct on all aspects of fire safety management, can make a major difference in an emergency situation.

Photo luminescent Means of Escape Signing

Escape signs can be used to create complete emergency way finding guidance systems that can be easily followed when evacuating a building. These emergency way finding guidance systems provide visual communication to occupants concerning the location and direction of escape paths leading to a designated fire exit/exit.

It is important that all escape and access mechanisms provided for use in an emergency are clearly identified, and that operating instructions are clearly marked, including emergency equipment and opening mechanisms provided for occupants with disabilities.

Photo luminescent Fire Fighting Equipment Location & Identification

It is a statutory requirement to provide adequate means to raise the alarm and to provide the necessary equipment to tackle fires in an emergency. The location of vital fire fighting equipment must be clearly identified either by management procedures, or by the provision of signs.

Photo luminescent Mandatory Instruction Notices

Mandatory instruction notices are signs prescribing specific behavior. E.g. Fire Door Keep Shut, Keep Clear, Close These Doors at Night

It is imperative that fire action notices are placed in key positions within a building, outlining specific actions to be taken when a fire is discovered or, the fire alarm is sounded. Place graphical symbols within their fire action notice signs, to reinforce the training and instruction of employees regarding the meaning and measures to be taken in connection with safety signs, as outlined under statutory requirements.

Fire safety management should deal with the specific needs of occupants with disabilities, and provisions should be outlined within policy statements and training schedules. Formal instruction should ensure the safety of disabled people in the event of fire, by personnel given specific responsibility for assisting disabled people to a designated place of safety.

Photo luminescent Health & Safety Signing - communication in health & safety [top]

Health & Safety at work is the responsibility of all personnel within a working environment. The prevention of accident, injury or harm to an individual is the responsibility of managers, owners and/or occupiers. The provision of Health & Safety signing is vitally important to the process of ensuring that the individual is aware of the risks involved in a process and the measures to be taken to ensure safe working practices.

All the health & safety signs are designed to conform to all of the relevant Domestic and International Standards: BS5378: Part 1: 1980 & Part 3: 1982, BS5499 Part 1: 1990, ISO 3864: 1984, and satisfy the requirements of EC Directives 77/576/EEC & 92/58/EEC.

The range of Photo luminescent health & safety signs include mandatory instruction notices, hazard identification and prohibition signs.

Photo luminescent HTM Escape Route Signing [top]

Health Technical Memorandum 65 (HTM 65) published as part of HTM 54.1 specifies a new range of fire safety signs for NHS Estates. This range of fire safety signs follows the revision of BS 5499 in 1990 specifically to meet the requirements for graphical symbol representation to ensure international recognition of evacuation routes and fire fighting equipment location and identification.

This range includes exit and fire exit signing, including symbols that are particular to the NHS, mandatory instruction notices and fire equipment location and identification signs.

The health & Safety (Safety Signs & Signals) regulations 1996 requires that where extinguishers are placed in positions hidden from direct view, their location should be indicated by signs and, where appropriate, directional arrows.
